Pastoral Care
The Role of Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care
At the British School of Lanzarote, we believe that every student should feel safe, supported, valued and able to thrive.
Our Pastoral Care approach focuses on the wellbeing, personal development and individual needs of our students. We recognise that every child is different, and that their needs may change throughout their school journey. We therefore work closely with students, families and staff to understand each individual and provide appropriate support within the school’s role and capabilities.
Wellbeing
The wellbeing of our students is an important part of school life. We aim to create an environment where students feel listened to, respected and comfortable seeking support when they need it.
Our pastoral approach supports students in developing:
- Emotional wellbeing and resilience
- Positive relationships and respectful communication
- Confidence, independence and self-awareness
- Healthy habits and positive choices
- Online safety and responsible use of technology
- A strong sense of belonging within the school community
We encourage open communication between students, families and the school so that concerns can be identified as early as possible and appropriate support can be considered.
SEND – Supporting Individual Needs
We recognise that some students may have additional learning needs or require adjustments to help them access learning and participate fully in school life.
Our approach focuses on understanding each student’s individual strengths, needs and circumstances. Where appropriate, we may adapt classroom strategies, teaching approaches or the learning environment to provide additional support and help students develop confidence and independence.
We believe that effective support is based on collaboration. We work closely with families to understand their child’s needs and to consider the information and recommendations available to us.
Where a student is receiving support from external professionals, such as educational psychologists, therapists or other specialists, we are happy to collaborate with families and relevant professionals, where appropriate and with the necessary consent. This helps us to understand the student’s needs and, where possible, ensure that appropriate strategies are considered within the school environment.
Our aim is not to take the place of external specialists, but to work together with families and professionals to support each student’s experience at school as effectively as we can.
Safeguarding
The safety and wellbeing of our students are central to our pastoral approach.
We promote a culture in which students feel safe and know that they can speak to a trusted adult if they have a concern or something is worrying them. Staff have a responsibility to remain alert to concerns about students’ safety and wellbeing and to follow the school’s safeguarding procedures when concerns arise.
We also encourage families to communicate with us if there is anything that may affect their child’s safety or wellbeing. By maintaining open communication between home and school, we can work together to identify concerns and provide appropriate support.
